The Audeze LCD series are planar magnetic headphones built on a large, oval ear cup that requires a correspondingly large pad. The stock pads are good, but the LCD family is used seriously — long listening sessions, studio work, critical evaluation — and pads wear out. The question is what to replace them with.
Available materials
Choice Leather: Protein leather over memory foam. Seals firmly against the face, which reinforces the low-end authority the LCD series is known for. Durable, easy to clean, runs warmer than the velour options.
Choice Suede: Microsuede outer, memory foam fill. More breathable than leather while still providing a good seal. The midrange transparency of the LCD-2 and LCD-X stays intact; suede does not alter the signature as dramatically as solid leather.
Elite Velour: High-grade velour, memory foam fill. The most acoustically neutral option. Preserves the planar driver's detail retrieval and wide staging without adding the low-end emphasis of leather. The right choice if you want the LCD to sound like itself with better pads.
Elite Sheepskin: Real sheepskin leather. Firm seal, premium construction, adds warmth and bass weight. The LCD-2 in particular responds well to a warmer pad choice; the LCD-X less so if you want to maintain its relative neutrality.
Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin: Sheepskin with perforations in the driver-facing surface. Balances the leather's sonic weight with improved airflow and a wider perceived soundstage. The most technically interesting option for users who want real leather build without fully closing down the presentation.
Elite Hybrid: Velour driver-face, leather surrounds, memory foam fill. Long-session comfort combined with the acoustic openness of velour. For a headphone that deserves to be worn for hours at a time, the thermal comfort benefit is real.
