The HD 700 is a divisive headphone. Wide soundstage, comfortable fit, and a peak somewhere around 6 kHz that became its defining characteristic in every forum thread it ever appeared in. Whether that peak bothers you depends heavily on your source material and your sensitivity. Either way, the 150-ohm open-back platform is genuinely capable, and pad choice has a measurable effect on the high-frequency presentation.
Available materials
Elite Velour: High-grade velour with a thick memory foam fill. The velour face toward the driver maintains the open, spacious character of the HD 700's soundstage. If you like the headphone and want a more durable pad that does not interfere with the tuning, this is the straightforward pick. Some listeners report a slight softening of the upper-mid peak with the thicker foam fill, though this varies by ear and fit.
Elite Hybrid: Velour face, memory foam fill, leather surrounds. Adds thermal comfort and a more premium outer construction while keeping the velour acoustic face. The leather sides reduce airflow around the cup perimeter, which can reduce some brightness. Worth considering if long listening sessions expose the treble peak as a fatigue factor for you specifically.
