The DT 770 (closed), DT 880 (semi-open), and DT 990 (open) are the enduring workhorses of the Beyerdynamic range. They have been in continuous production for decades because they are genuinely useful: easy to drive, consistent, available in multiple impedances, and well-built enough to survive years of daily use. The velour ear pads eventually compress and wear. What you replace them with changes the headphone.

Available materials

Choice: Dekoni's Jerzee line. Budget memory foam, value-oriented construction. Keeps the DT series accessible while delivering better pressure distribution than worn stock velour. The entry point for anyone who wants comfort improvement without investing in premium materials.

Choice (black): The Choice Hybrid construction in black. Memory foam fill, slightly firmer outer than the Jerzee. A step up from the budget option without reaching Elite territory.

Choice Leather: Protein leather over memory foam. Seals the cup more firmly than velour, which adds bass body to all three models. The DT 990's open-back presentation takes on more low-end weight; the DT 770's already solid bass gets reinforced further. Worth it if you want a warmer signature.

Choice Suede: Microsuede outer, memory foam fill. More breathable than leather, closer to the original velour character acoustically. Sits between the Jerzee and leather options in both texture and sonic effect.

Elite Velour: High-grade velour, thick memory foam fill. The conservative acoustic pick: preserves the tuning character of whichever model you own while improving durability and pressure distribution. If the stock sound is what you like and you want it to continue, this is where to go.

Elite Sheepskin: Real sheepskin, solid face. Premium feel, firm seal, more bass weight than any velour option. The most significant departure from the stock DT sound. For listeners who find the DT 990's brightness fatiguing, the added low-end ballast from sheepskin can bring the presentation into balance.

Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin: Sheepskin with perforations in the driver face. Reduces the seal effect of solid leather, keeping more of the soundstage openness that the DT 880 and DT 990 are designed to provide. Real leather feel and durability without fully closing down the presentation.

Elite Hybrid: Velour face, leather surrounds, memory foam fill. The all-day comfort option. Velour acoustics with thermal management and leather durability on the outer. For headphones worn for long monitoring or work sessions, the practical difference in warmth is noticeable.
