The HD 820 is Sennheiser's closed-back answer to the HD 800: same 300-ohm driver, enclosed in a cup with a Gorilla Glass back panel that acts as an acoustic mirror to control internal reflections. The result is a closed headphone with an unusually open presentation for its category. At this price point, the stock pads are fine, but they are not the ceiling.
The HD 820 cup geometry is shared with the HD 800 platform. Dekoni's Elite range fits drop-in, and the pad choice affects the HD 820's already carefully managed internal acoustics.
Available materials
Elite Velour: The most neutral swap. Velour maintains airflow through the pad face, which keeps the reflective back-panel behaviour working roughly as designed. Improved comfort and durability without rerouting the acoustic signature.
Elite Sheepskin: Solid sheepskin leather, firm seal. Adds bass weight and tightens the low end further -- the HD 820 already has more bass than the HD 800, and sheepskin amplifies this. Worth trying if you find the HD 820's signature a little cool or distant.
Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin: Perforated sheepskin face. Reduces the seal effect, which for the HD 820 specifically means the glass back panel has less air pressure behind it. The soundstage opens slightly. An interesting option for listeners who want the HD 820's isolation without its relatively closed presentation.
Elite Hybrid: Velour driver-face, leather surrounds. Keeps the acoustic openness of velour while adding comfort and durability for long sessions. At the HD 820's price point, the pad quality should match the headphone's ambitions.
