The Sony MDR-Z1R is Sony's reference closed-back flagship: a 70mm dome driver in a magnesium ear cup, 40 ohms, and a tuning that prioritises warmth and body over analytical transparency. At this price point, the stock pads are a genuine engineering consideration, not an afterthought. Dekoni offers their Elite Sheepskin as the upgrade option.
The MDR-Z1R's cup geometry requires a specific fit. Dekoni's Elite Sheepskin for the Z1R uses real sheepskin leather over memory foam fill and maintains the firm seal that gives the Z1R its bass character. The sheepskin construction is more durable than the stock material and feels better against the ear during extended listening sessions. At the Z1R's investment level, the pad quality should match the rest of the headphone.
